This hands-on activity introduces Grade 6 learners to the different parts of speech in a fun, visual, and interactive way. It blends creativity with movement, helping students recognize and categorize words with confidence.
Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Conjunctions, Determiners, Pronouns, and Prepositions.
Cut eight rectangular strips of paper.
Wrote each part of speech name clearly on a separate strip.
Decorated each strip with a hand-drawn butterfly in a unique color to make the categories visually appealing and easy to identify.
Glued each decorated paper strip onto a plastic cup, turning the cups into sorting stations.
Made long, finger-shaped cardboard strips.
Wrote examples of each part of speech on the sticks (e.g., prepositions: to, on, in).
Placed the cups in accessible spots for students to sort the word sticks.
Students take the word sticks (the cardboard strips).
They read each word and decide which part of speech it belongs to.
They place the correct word strip inside the matching cup.
Teacher checks understanding, supports learners, and encourages discussion.
The activity can be done individually, in pairs, or in teams.
By the end of the activity, students will be able to:
Distinguish between eight different parts of speech.
Sort vocabulary accurately based on grammatical function.
Develop confidence in identifying word categories.
Learn through movement, creativity, and interactive practice.
This activity showed me how creative materials can transform grammar lessons for young learners. Students were highly engaged, moved around the classroom, and demonstrated a stronger understanding of parts of speech. The visual colors, butterfly icons, and physical movement reduce anxiety, support visual learners, and make abstract grammar more concrete and enjoyable. I plan to expand this idea into future vocabulary and grammar lessons.
