Othello in Shakespeare’s tragedy embodies the classical tragic hero: a man of exceptional military reputation, immense value to the state, and commanding rhetorical power. Yet beneath this visible strength lies a profound internal weakness that shapes his tragic trajectory. While Othello is a decisive man of action on the battlefield, within the dramatic structure he becomes a reactive figure, one who does not generate events but instead responds to external forces, most significantly the manipulative influence of Iago.

Othello’s relationship with Desdemona is similarly fragile at its core. It is founded on pity, narrative storytelling, and heroic admiration rather than on deep emotional intimacy or mutual understanding. As a result, their love lacks stability and becomes highly susceptible to doubt and disintegration. Once suspicion takes hold, Othello gradually loses his capacity for rational judgment, resorting to murder as what he believes to be a definitive solution, an act he reframes as a matter of honor to restore mental clarity and control.

Rather than reclaiming his role as the protector of the state, Othello ultimately relinquishes his life through suicide. This final act constitutes a double tragedy: both an act of self-inflicted punishment and a last attempt to reclaim meaning, agency, and narrative coherence after the complete collapse of his self-control and moral authority.
